Schoolyard State Section

The Schoolyard on Trailforks.com

Background

Evan O'Toole, former Laramie BikeNet President, had the idea to develop trails on the state section of land, just to the east of Laramie, when he served on the City of Laramie's Parks and Recreation Ad Hoc Parks and Recreation Master Plan Committee with BikeNet member Dan McCoy. It is through Evan's work, with the help of BikeNet members and donors, that we have these trails today.

In 2016, Laramie BikeNet obtained a special use permit from the State Land's and Investments Board, through Albany County, to develop a multi-use trail system on the state section. In the spring of 2017, Laramie BikeNet obtained a grant from the Albany County Recreation Board to plan and develop the trail system. State sections of land in Wyoming, by statute, are required to benefit K-12 education. In developing this trail system, Evan named this section the “Schoolyard,” and trail names follow a theme relating to K-12 education. Easy access to these trails from town allow students of any age to get out and enjoy the outdoors. In the summer of 2017, Laramie BikeNet contracted with Kay-Linn Enterprises from Boulder, CO to plan and design the trail system, and Wyo Trails LLC of Laramie, WY to construct the first phase of trails. Volunteers continued to build out the trail system over the next several years.

In November of 2020, with the following resolution, Laramie BikeNet transferred the Schoolyard lease to Pilot Hill in recognition of the need to consolidate land management. BikeNet still hosts volunteer trail maintenance events in conjunction with Pilot Hill. If you would like to learn more about volunteer opportunities, please join our newsletter!
