New! TRAFx Trail Counter

In order to help us quantify the use the new trails are getting by mountain bikers, hikers, runners, and other non-motorized users, we use a TRAFx trail counter . The information gained from these counters will help us to better understand and manage these trails as well as help us when applying for grants in the future.
Background
In 2017, Laramie BikeNet obtained a special use permit from the state, in conjunction with Albany County, to develop a multi-use trail system on the state section. In the spring of 2017, Laramie BikeNet obtained a grant from the Albany County Recreation Board to plan and develop the trail system. State sections of land in Wyoming, by statute, are required to benefit K-12 education. In developing this trail system, BikeNet fondly renamed this section the “Schoolyard,” and trail names follow a theme relating to K-12 education. These are and will be used as a place for the 7220 Racing High School Team to practice and for the Laramie Youth Cycling Program to provide students grades 3-12 the opportunity to get outside and enjoy the sport of mountain biking through the guidance of trained coaches. Easy access to these trails from town allow students of any age to get out and enjoy the outdoors.
Long-term, BikeNet hopes to build 6-8 miles of trail in a “stacked loop system” on the state section, and eventually decommission/rehabilitate unauthorized roads.
In the summer of 2017, Laramie BikeNet contracted with Kay-Linn Enterprises from Boulder, CO to plan and design the trail system, and Wyo Trails LLC of Laramie, WY to construct the first phase of trails. Long-term, the plan is to continue to build-out the trail system with grants, private donations, and volunteer time over the next few years.
This diverse trail system includes beginner-friendly trails, improved narrow backcountry trails, and descending-optimized trails for multipurpose trail use. The multi-use nature of these trails creates a unique opportunity for students and their families to spend time together in the outdoors.
